The manufacturing process of seamless steel pipe starts with a solid round billet. The blank is then heated to very high temperatures and stretched and pulled through a form until it takes the shape of a hollow tube. There are three great advantages to making pipes this way.

The biggest advantage of seamless welded pipe is that it improves the ability to withstand pressure. The weakest point in the welded pipe is the weld seam. But because the seamless welded pipe isn't welded, it doesn't have that seam, making it equally strong around the full circumference of the pipe.

Because the welded pipe is wrapped around another form before it is welded and because welding adds heat, stress, and other extraneous variables to the forming process, it can never be as round as a seamless welded pipe.

Seamless welded pipe is a continuous extrusion of the alloy, which means it will have a circular cross-section that you can rely on, which is helpful when you are installing pipe or adding fittings.

Strength Under Load

Seamless welded pipe is sometimes more expensive than other forms of welded pipe, but it is also more reliable.

This is because it has greater strength under load. An empty pipe must support its own weight at all times, but it must also support that weight when the pipe is filled with material or under load. Piping failures and leaks in welded piping typically occur at the weld. But since seamless pipe has no seams, these failures do not occur.

These advantages make seamless welded pipe the material of choice for a range of commercial piping applications, including shipbuilding, pipelines, oil rigs, oilfield equipment, pressure vessels, machinery parts, and offshore drilling platforms.
